Respirator Fit Testing

Expert Quantitative Respirator Fit Testing in Cambridge, ON

Proper respirator fit testing is essential for worker safety across a range of industries, including healthcare, firefighting, construction, and manufacturing. At our Cambridge-based service location or visiting your site, we can provide certified fit testing for N95 masks, half-face and full-face respirators, and self-contained breathing apparatuses (SCBAs).

Fit testing ensures that the respirator forms a secure seal against the user's face, preventing dangerous airborne contaminants from leaking into the breathing zone. An improper fit can allow particulates, biological agents, chemicals, vapours, fumes, or mists to bypass the mask—putting the user at serious risk.

Even small gaps between the mask and the skin can cause significant health hazards, from short-term respiratory irritation to long-term illness. In high-risk environments, exposure to hazardous substances without a proper seal can result in loss of consciousness or even death.

Why Respirator Fit Testing Matters

Whether you're using an N95 respirator in a healthcare setting, a half-face mask in an industrial plant, or a full-face SCBA in emergency response, a proper fit test:

  • Confirms the right mask size and model for your face

  • Ensures compliance with CSA Z94.4 and Occupational Health & Safety regulations

  • Protects workers from life-threatening exposure

Qualitative vs Quantitative

Qualitative vs. Quantitative Fit Testing: What's the Difference?

When it comes to respirator fit testing in Cambridge, Ontario, it's important to understand the difference between qualitative and quantitative fit testing. Both methods ensure that your N95, half-face, or full-face respirator forms a proper seal to protect against airborne hazards—but they use different approaches.

  • Qualitative Fit Testing (QLFT) is a pass/fail method that relies on the user's sense of taste or smell. A test agent (such as saccharin or Bitrex) is introduced while wearing the respirator. If the user detects the substance, the fit is inadequate. QLFT is typically used for N95 respirators and other tight-fitting negative pressure masks.

  • Quantitative Fit Testing (QNFT) uses a machine to measure actual leakage into the respirator. It provides a numerical fit factor and is required for full-face and SCBA respirators, or when a more precise fit is needed.

Whether you're in healthcare, construction, emergency response, or manufacturing, we provide both qualitative and quantitative fit testing services in Cambridge and surrounding areas to ensure your team is compliant, safe, and properly protected.
